Who in the world are the “Vintage Hiking Gals?” I bet most of you’ve never heard of them …have you? I wouldn’t have either…unless I was married to one of them! Among their peers, many consider them to be among the hiking elites, masters of the trail …outdoor heroes to be emulated. Maybe you should get to know them. Are you ready? Then read on…

The Vintage Hiking Gals are a group of women who are over the age of 50, with some over 60+. Many would call them, “hiking fanatics.” They can plan a hike at the drop of a hat …to them it’s life, not a workout. Who are these ladies who’s work ethic and commitment to the sport, demand respect? Let me introduce you to them…Sherry Kast, Cheryl Moreno, my wife Becky Chasteen, Kathy Hefton.

So, how do they do it you might ask, especially week-in and week-out? After all, it takes disciplined work to get ready for a 40 to 50 mile hike. Well, for starters it’s hard work! It involves rising early on your days off (usually weekends). Maybe working out in he dark, after the day job. That…is exactly how they do it.

Although avid hikers, they certainly understand the responsibilities of everyday life. Things like; the 8-5 job, family responsibility and spousal commitment, work and social obligations. At times, I don’t know how they do it. The truth is, none of these things have stunted their love for “the hike.”

From my perspective, one of their most honorable traits would be their huge commitment to “the team.” I pity the person that tries to come between them and their team mates! They have an unswerving devotion to each other and believe me…it’s “no woman left behind.” They clearly believe they are better together than they are apart.

I think it’s time to celebrate this amazing group of ladies. …The Vintage Hiking Gals. Spread the news about them, emulate their commitment to the sport. Go ahead, reach out to them for advice and encouragement. And don’t forget, if you see a group 4-5 determined ladies hiking on the trail you’d better move over! It’s the Vintage Hiking Gals!
